Helen Frankenthaler, a New York artist whose bursts of color achieved by pouring thinned paint onto canvas from coffee cans helped point art in fresh directions after the initial post-World War II explosion of Abstract Expressionism. Frankenthaler died Tuesday after a long, unspecified illness at her home in Darien, Conn. She was 83.
In 1952, the 23-year-old Frankenthaler hit upon her "soak stain" technique, achieving some of the vibrancy, lightness and pliancy of watercolor by thinning down acrylic paint and pouring it on a large, unprimed canvas spread on the floor of her Manhattan studio.
"Mountains and Sea," her breakthrough in pink, blue and green, set a style that critics — although not universally — have applauded for its lyricism and luminous use of color. Frankenthaler's stain technique influenced others such as Morris Louis, Jules Olitski and Kenneth Noland, giving rise to the Color Field movement of the 1950s and '60s.

Those are the details...but I was up there today to look at preparations...it is going to be amazing..much of the structure is in place. The contributions of Signal Artists are as follows: there will be a huge painting at the back of the altar by Noel Cleary, fabulous drawings by Aoife Fotzgerald, terrific ceramic installation by Frances Brosan and a visual research art work involving the names of the WW1 fallen from the Bray Memorial on the Quinsboro Road by Pat Burns. There are other works including huge white crosses throughout the pews, a "keep the home fires burning" installation, trenches, fabulous flower arrangements and more ....it will really be a treat for the whole family and brings history alive.

This is a workshop where participants will make their original prints through the medium of drypoint, etching and chine colle.
Chine colle roughly translates from French, chine = tissue and collé meaning glue or paste. "Chine" because the thin paper traditionally used in the process was imported to Europe from China, India and/or Japan.

Participants will create their images on perspex (acetate), copper and aluminium exploring drypoint and etching processes to make incisions on the surface of plates. A whole range of tools will be available such as roulettes, drypoints of differents types and burin.
The printing process then will include not only the etching paper but also the lightweight paper (as the Asian papers are referred to). This paper (usually colorful, texturized and of the same size of the plate) will be placed between the plate and the etching paper resulting in a beautiful and accomplished chine colle.
No previous experience or skills required as tutor will provide full assistance throughout the workshop. Recommended for teenagers and adults.
Debora Ando is a Brazilian artist based in Dublin since 2006. She studied in University of Sao Paulo where she got a degree in Fine Arts. Ando is currently finishing her MA in Visual Arts Practice with IADT, Dublin.
She is a Board Member in Black Church Print Studio where she also teaches etching and performs the role of Head of Education committee. She is also part of the artists panel in the National Gallery of Ireland, The Ark and National Print Museum.
She has been the recipient of Arts Council's Travelling and Training Award for a two-month residency in CAMAC, France and has also received grants from Culture Ireland for the Irish and Colombian Print Exchange she is organizing alongside the Original Print Gallery and La Estampa print studio.
Ando has exhibited in Brazil, England, United States, Ireland, Wales, France and Poland.

WHAT A NIGHT!!! The wonderful listed building St. Cronan's opposite the Mermaid slated to become a hotel but now lying derelict was transformed into a museum of modern art. A group of 30 contemporary artists from Bray came together and created a strong, forceful, stimulating and provoking show of work. The exhibition planned to coincide with Culture Night, opened early on the Wednesday and closed on Sunday.
It was an amazing show as many of the artists responded to the paint peeling walls and little rooms and large rooms with ornate fixtures and dark places and long abandoned office fixtures. Could we have a repeat please?

DUBLIN CONTEMPORARY, IRELAND’S INTERNATIONAL ART EXHIBITION, 2011 OPENS!
Ireland’s international art exhibition, Dublin Contemporary 2011, turns the city into a vibrant art gallery from September 6th to October 31st 2011.
Responding to the theme Terrible Beauty—Art, Crisis, Change & The Office of Non-Compliance, and led by curators Jota Castro and Christian Viveros-Fauné, the exhibition presents the work of more than 100 of the world’s most exciting artists, whose artworks will establish Dublin as the destination to discover the latest in Irish and international contemporary art.
The main exhibition hub at Earlsfort Terrace will show a variety of artworks in a range of unusual spaces, including a 6 meter long ceramic squid by artist David Zink-Yi and an enormous crib with a multi-TV screen mobile by Chinese artist Wang Du. Visitors can also expect to enjoy an intriguing series of street works disseminated in 22 locations around Dublin, as well as sculptures in the Iveagh Gardens. The art trail continues with exhibitions at the nearby Royal Hibernian Academy, which will house Lisa Yuskavage’s unique brand of painted ladies, new installations and paintings in The National Gallery of Ireland and Douglas Hyde Gallery at Trinity College, as well as a solo show by Willie Doherty at the Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane.

Supervisor Claire Flood was presented with a lovely bouquet of flowers from the Executive Board for all her hard work organising the food, the people, the chairs and tables, the creative ambience and all the sewing that went into the crafts. Great kudos go to all the staff who worked beyond the call of duty and of course special thanks to Signal Art Society Committee members, Denis, Gregg, and Penny. Of course we cant forget the artists who made beautiful ceramics, Noel Cleary, Michelle Fullam and Frances Brosnan, the cooks, washers and servers, all the artists who donated work. Culture Night: This is an annual national event and will be running in Wicklow for the 2^nd year. This year there will be a pop up artists collective at the old council offices. Noel asks that artists from Signal get involved. There is lots of space and we hope to facilitate 25 artists. There will be a meeting on Wednesday 17^th August between 12 & 8 pm for artists to clean and clear area. The next meeting will be 24^th August for artists to put forward their proposals, all work considered – installations, projections, sculptures etc. The theme is Culture is the Heart of Community. Hanging/installation will be in Sunday 18^th of September with the unofficial opening on Wednesday 21^st of September running until Friday 23^rd September.

Gorse Hill Gardens are situated on the eastern cliffside of Bray Head overlooking the Irish sea. The gardens are therefore quite steep and not suitable for wheelchairs, people with walking disabilities or anybody who is unsteady on their legs. Children must be accompanied and supervised by adults at all times.

There is NO parking on site. It is recommended that you leave your car at the beginning of the Cliff Road and walk down to the gardens. This may take approximately fifteen minutes and is a pleasantly scenic road with the sea and the village of Greystones on your right. In the gardens there is a Living

Creative Time and A Prior magazine have put out a call for people to bring a chair and sit peacefully outside Chinese embassies in support of the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei's immediate release this Sunday April 17th. Ai Weiwei has been detained by the Chinese government since April 3rd on suspicion of economic crimes.

The form of Sunday’s planned protest — in which participants will bring chairs and sit down outside Chinese government buildings around the world — draws on an installation titled “Fairytale: 1001 Qing Dynasty Wooden Chairs,” which Mr. Ai did at Documenta in Kassel, Germany, in 2007. In it, he arranged 1,001 late Ming and Qing Dynasty wooden chairs around the exhibition.

All artists should really think about supporting this protest, it is really important for lots of people to show up at the Chinese embassy in support of this very brave and controversial artist.

AT THE EDGE OF THE SKIN - CECILY BRENNAN AT THE MERMAID ARTS CENTRE

Well known artist Cecily Brennan is currently at the Mermaid Arts Centre here in Bray. Brennan is well known to many of the artists in Bray who she taught in the Fine Arts Programme at the Dun Laoghaire Institute for Arts, Design and Technology. Dont miss this very exciting exhibition.

Cecily Brennan has worked in many media, including painting, various forms of graphics and three-dimensional materials. At the edge of the skin, however, is the first survey exhibition that looks specifically at her work in video, which now amounts to a substantial proportion of her output. The trajectory of her development as an artist takes her closer and closer to the subject of individual tension and trauma and its at times painfully direct visualisation. While evident in other media, as in her iconic, stainless steel Bandaged Heart from 2001 and her tempera paintings of damaged bodies in Heat, the theme is most explicitly addressed in her videos. They have tended to move from the abstract manipulation of materials in a quasi-scientific idiom to the naked vulnerability of the human body and the human psyche in a series of stark, performative pieces including Unstrung, Balancing, Rubber Band, Melancholia and the startling Black Tears.

DAVE FLYNN, SIGNAL ART SOCIETY MEMBER HOLDS ART CLASSES AT LUISNE KILCOOLE

Two art classes run by Dave Flynn will be at the LUISNE Centre in Kilcoole, County Wicklow. Both take place on Monday evenings, starting on 31st January. They are 10 week courses and the cost is €100 each:

Art Group: starting at 6pm and finishing at 7:30. This is for art practitioners and for people already engaged in some art practice. This is a facilitated group, and there will be assistance on request.

Beginners Art Class: starting at 8pm and finishing at 9:30. This is for anyone with little or no experience, and includes art history, mark making, still life, figure work, abstract work and colour.

PRIDE OF PLACE AWARDS, TRIM, NOVEMBER 2010

The winners of the 8th Co-operation Ireland All-Island Pride of Place Competition were announced on Saturday, 13 November, in the Knightsbrook Hotel. Trim, County Meath. Local TD and Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey, announced the winners at the gala ceremony, which was hosted by Meath County Council and part sponsored by Indaver and IPB. SIGNAL ARTS CENTRE was nominated by the Wicklow County Council This year the prize eluded us. However the staff of Signal and the Board members gained in the experience of coming together and working for the award nomination and presentation to the judges for Pride of Place. It was an honour to be nominated. Board members, Linda Dunne O'Neill, Colum O'Neill, Michelle Fullam and Noel Cleary attended the awards on behalf of Signal Arts Centre.

Dave Flynn is teaching two new art courses coming up at the LUISNE Centre in Kilcoole, County Wicklow,
One course is for people already practicing art on Mondays.
Dave facilitates the group and assists on request.
The other course is for Beginners on Wednesdays.

The Royal Ulster Academy has accepted one of Dave Flynn's paintings for their annual show, which opened in Belfast's Ulster Museum on 14th October. It's alongside the Botanic Gardens and is a beautiful venue. The show is running until 14th November for anyone interested and finding themselves in Belfast.

More than 30 people, of which a number of people were new to Signal and many of the Bray community turned out to enjoy the film "Did Anyone Notice Us" produced by Edmund Lynch. Edmund Lynch regaled the audience with his stories of the making this film. This screening was sponsored by the Social Inclusion Unit of Wicklow County Council under the auspices of Patricia Reilly. The hard work of Eleanor Phillips and Linde Fidorra ensured the success of this event. On the night along with Eleanor and Linde, Lian Callaghan made sure that everyone was welcomed and Vincent Rae, Signal's techie took care of the film presentation.

‘In an attempt to find the right words..’ is a new permanent public art installation by artist James Hayes at The Belmullet Arts Centre, Áras Inis Gluaire, County Mayo. There will be an official launch event to mark and celebrate the new artwork on Friday 22nd October at 1pm at Áras Inis Gluaire which is open to everyone to attend.

‘In an attempt to find the right words..’consists of over 2000 bronze cast pencils which appear to have been launched (dart-like) onto the wall.

Funding for the commission is via the Percent for Art scheme. James’ proposal was chosen because of his unique idea and his willingness to involve many people in the process. He spent time in Belmullet during May, giving talks at local schools and at the arts centre, and held workshops for children at Áras Inis Gluaire

Earlier in the year there was an open invitation to anyone who wanted their own special pencil, which had some significance to them, to donate it to be cast in bronze and included in the final artwork. There was a great response, with many local people donating pencils, also several writers, artists and poets from across the country donated their pencils too.

An exhibition documenting the process of creating the artwork, and the stories behind some of the donated pencils, will be exhibited in the gallery space from the launch date, 22nd October, until 10th November.

There will also be an opportunity to attend a talk from the artist on the morning of the launch event at 11am Friday 22nd October, in the theatre space at Áras Inis Gluaire. Artist James Hayes will talk about his art practice, with specific reference to his project in Belmullet. He and Gaynor Seville, Public Art Co-ordinator with Mayo County Council, will be available for a question and answer session after the talk and will also conduct a tour of the exhibition.The talk at 11am and launch event at 1pm are free and all are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be provided.

FLEET OF DREAMS CULTURE NIGHT SEPT 24, 2010

"It was a Fairyland" according to one observer of the Fleet of Dreams on the Dargle River in the heart of Bray. An estimated 600 to700 people watched as Signal Arts Centre Artists and friends lit 1000 floating lanterns (purchased directly from Songlin Shu, Joy Factory, China). The pictures cannot express the true beauty and feeling as the lanterns, handpainted and drawn on by local school children, artists and friends of Signal floated down the Dargle River.

Signal Arts Centre Executive Board is to be congratulated on their hard work bringing this project to fruition. It could not have been done of course without the terric support from the all the Centre's workers and artists from Signal Arts Society who gave so freely of their spare time.

Many groups other than the local schools were involved. The Bray Community Brass Band who provided the music as the fleet moved down the Dargle and Blue Fever playing at Signal. Active volunteers came from Little Bray Resource Centre, Ballywaltrim Resource Centre, Queen of Peace Canoe Club, Bray Anglers, Bray Sea Scouts. Support and assistance was provided by members of Bray Town Council, Bray Chamber of Commerce, and Wicklow County Arts Office.

'Tree Man Saw Sedge', A Joint Exhibition by Yanny Petters and Annette Hennessy

A double treat is in store for visitors to Castle Espie Wetland Centre’s Graffan Gallery from Saturday 18th September to Sunday 3rd October, when botanical artist Yanny Petters and bronze sculptor Annette Hennessy bring their joint show and sale to the County Down bird sanctuary.

‘Tree Man Saw Sedge’ is an exhibition of paintings and bronzes inspired by a sense of the natural forces in the environment. Wicklow-based painter, Yanny Petters draws on the rich habitats of fields and wetlands in her detailed studies of wild plants, while Annette Hennessy’s bronze sculptures are small-scale, figurative, one-off pieces that reflect man’s relationship with nature.

Complementing Annette’s three-dimensional statements of habitat, Yanny’s watercolours, oils and ‘painting on glass’, fittingly sourced from grasslands and wetlands, include a number of works inspired by the environment around Castle Espie Wetland Centre.

During the exhibition at Castle Espie, Yanny will offer a demonstration and a workshop in drawing and painting inspired by the plants in the reserve.

Fabulous artwork to be seen at this exhibition of 3 graduate colleagues from DLIADT, Kathryn Ryan, Laura Butler and Jonathan Curran. Exquisite paintings, sculptures, prints and art books. The work of the three artists form a cohesive and comprehensive array of artworks. I loved especially Laura Butler's artbook on aspects of Albert Avenue, the encaustic paintings of Kathryn Ryan and the sculpture of waxed copperplates of Jonathan Curran.

MERMAID CENTRE, BRAY, 'UNBUILDING' EXHIBITION OPENING

A massive collaboration of artists, architects and artists culminated in a rotating exhibition of 11 artists at the Mermaid Centre in Bray.
Noel Cleary, Eleanor Phillips and Pat Burnes from Signal Arts Centre were on hand to see the work unveiled.

Familiar faces in the crowd, that I recognised were former staff artist and Maura Ryan, along with Zan O' Loughlin and Dermot McCabe and his lovely wife from The Bray Arts.
Many local artists were there including Siobhan Sherlock, Damien Flood ( his art along with Alan Butler opened this exhibition), Kate Warner, Ed Phillips, also Musician Rocco was there to. Rocco will accompany the Whimsical Art Tour from the Mermaid to Signal Arts Centre on Culture Night Sept 24.
The co-curators are the Mermaid's Eilís Lavelle, Rosie Lynch and Clíodhna Shaffrey. Congratulations on a very thought provoking exhibition.

A sunny and warm Saturday afternoon, the directors of Signal Arts Centre arrived at the Orangerie, Kilruddery, Bray. All there listening to wonderful jazz band in th Orangerie at Kilruddery, Bray were the movers and shakers of the events and celebrations of Irish culture to take place on Friday, September 24,2010. Wicklow County Cathaorhearlach, Tom Fortune congratulated all the volunteer workers with a special mention of Signal Arts Centre as well the the Wicklow Arts Officer Jenny and PR advisor Ann Nolan on all the work entailed on producing a night of culture that will underpin the economy and tourist industry in County Wicklow County. Signal Arts Centre featured highly in the events calendar produced for the night.

SONIA HACCIUS OPENING NIGHT AT SIGNAL ARTS CENTRE

A fabulous summer's night at Signal Arts Centre! A lighthearted group of friends and art afficianados turned up to celebrate the work of former Signal Arts Centre staffer Sonia. All were impressed with the honesty and impact of the puppet tableaux and women were seen shaking with laughter at Sonia's interpretation of the three Fates showing the three stages of woman. The concept was only equalled by the craftsmanship. I loved the tableaux but I have to say my favourite drawing was The Cougar, depicting an older woman offering lollipops to a young lad. Truly a unique exhibition not to be missed!

Well what a PARTYEEEE! Signal Arts Centre looked absolutely marvellous, wonderful bunting and chairs and tables outside. Enough thanks cannot be said to Claire and Signal Arts Centre Staff for the tremendous effort. Claire! What can anybody say, and everybody did say...the food was only fantastic. The elderflower and champagne drinks were a delight! A number of past staff dropped in to say Hello as did a number of Signal Art Society members. David Grant, Cathaoirleach of Bray Town Council dropped in to wish us well.

What a wonderful evening. Angela Cook regaled the audience with tales of her sojourn in Japan and read from her book ‘An Alien in Japan’.
A good number of people turned out on a busy Friday night and enjoyed tea and cookies with the book club. Angela was delighted with the reception and the fact that all the books she brought with her were sold. Buyers were thrilled to have Angela sign the books.

Time well spent and a big thank you to Denis and Penny who welcomed everyone so warmly. Signal staff spotted in the audience were Róisín Verdon and Christine Power. Great support for an excellent event. Next time we will take photos.

HERE COME THE JUDGE!

The Judges from PRIDE OF PLACE arrived in Signal on Thursday, June 24. Eleanor Phillips gave the presentation of 20 years of accomplishments that is the legacy of Signal Arts Staff and Volunteers. People were bursting with pride all over the place. Several staff gave their personal testimonies of working at Signal. There is no doubt that Signal Arts Centre is a very special place. The Centre itself was given a fantastic going over by Signal Staff and Volunteers under the direction of our CE Supervisor Claire Flood. The work involved in preparing for this award has made us all more aware of the concrete impact that Signal Arts Centre has not only on the town of Bray but also on the Wicklow area and beyond. Signal is grateful to the support received from FAS especially Fas Development Officer, Dearbhaile Heagney, Bray Town Council and Wicklow County Council. Wicklow County Council nominated Signal for this All Ireland Award after we won the Wicklow County Council Merit Award.

Judging for PRIDE OF PLACE carries on over the summer and the winners will be announced at an Oscar type Awards Ceremony in Trim, Co. Meath, November 13, 2010.

Some of Dana Schutz’ early images, painted about a decade ago, told the story of Frank, the last man on earth; other pictures showed people eating their own bodies; a few dealt directly with political or overtly social issues. Her flamboyant style, which frequently makes references to art history, and especially to the history of figurative painting, is colourful, gestural, and visceral.

It would be a mistake, nonetheless, to think of Dana Schutz’ art as unsubtle. She works with oppositions – painting and concept, intimacy and distance, cruelty and compassion, history and the present – and the meaning of her work lies in the liminal space where they abut and come together. Besides, there is puzzlement in her paintings, and not a little apprehension. They are more gloomy than they look, because their humour (much of it self-deprecating) disguises an underlying suspicion that the world doesn’t make a lot of sense, and when it does it doesn’t make much difference to things anyway.

According to the artist, the works in this exhibition are ‘like Tourette’s paintings’, in that they portray involuntaryactions: ‘Sometimes imagery comes to mind without any kind of context or larger narrative – a completely irrational,sometimes painful kind of imagery’. It is not impossible, these paintings seem to suggest, that such responses to the world might be more complex and intelligible than they first appear. They may, above all, signal a deep desire to escape from the clutches of an overbearing and disturbing world..

The Weed of Aughrim

After last year's very successful Murder Mystery Weekend, Signal staff once again headed off for a few days of utter madness... this time hosting 'The Weed of Aughrim', our slant on 'The Rose of Tralee'!

In total there were 7 'weeds' in the final... Miss Conduct (Róisín), Miss Chief (Christine), Miss 'n 'n Action (Karen), Miss Perceived (Anne-Marie), Miss Interpreted (Penny), Miss L. Toe (Lian) and a surprise 'weed' with a split personality (Sr. Concepta/Miss Conception) portrayed by none other than Denis!

This year we did it in style and brought with us our very own, extremely talented, hard-working and eternally patient Hair Stylist & Makeup Artist, Luiz. He also very kindly doubled as a judge alongside the glamorous Sharon Osbourne (aka Claire).

Our host for the evening was the flamboyant Marty (aka Greg) ably assisted by Ringster (Vincent), escort to the 'weeds'.

Much to the disgust of runner-up, Miss Conception, it was Miss Conduct (Róisín) who took home the crown and was duly presented with the winner's sash and a beautiful bunch of weeds!

Needless to say, the show was the highlight of our weekend... a roaring success and one to be repeated!

Philip Evans Exhibition at The Boardroom, Greystones - Opening Night Music by Luke Broughan

An exhibition by Philip Evans entitled ‘Welcome to the house of MOB’ at The Boardroom, Greystones, Co Wicklow runs from June 11th to 18th.
The show is an investigation into mob mentality and the way people can react to it resulting in a restriction of their actions by the fear of what they perceive to be the common opinion. The over-bearing sprawling mural in the space is designed to make the visitor feel small and intimidated, even though the mural itself is only made up of individuals at a base level, suggesting that mob mentality should always be questionable.
Opening night will have new music from DJ Luke Broughan, BYOB please. More information on the show and samples of work can be found on the website.

SIGNAL ARTS CENTRE ELEANOR PHILLIPS CURATOR SMALL WONDER AT GOLDEN THREAD GALLERY

Small Wonder is a collaboration between JEMA (The John Erickson Museum of Art) and the Golden Thread Gallery and explores the space between the realm of the imaginary and the miniature. The exhibition combines work produced for JEMA’s Next Chapter, paper works based on the miniature Museum’s plans that will eventually combine to form a book, and two new works by Fiona Larkin, developed directly from her JEMA Next Chapter project. Curated by Brendan Jamison, Sarah McAvera and Eleanor Phillips, the exhibition presents an alternative viewing of JEMA’s paper works alongside Fiona Larkin’s sound work The Listeners (Museum Whisperers) and performance The Woman Flag. Next Chapter

The JEMA Next Chapter spaces re-envision a page as a site for a museum project space. Artists were invited to produce work for the space provided, free of a specific theme. The notion that 'hypothetical thinking is still a form of reality' was a guiding force in the operation and conception of this project. The project includes 28 artists, of which 16 are Belfast-based and another set of the works produced will be on show at the Raccolte Frugone museum in Genoa, Italy. JEMA Director Sean Miller will be in Belfast on Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th June to present performances and collage projects with JEMA's giant rubber stamp and the JEMA walking stick galleries that will be toured throughout the streets of Belfast. The walking tour will depart from the gallery at 12pm on Tuesday 8th June.
Fiona Larkin: The Listeners (Museum Whisperers) / The Woman Flag

For The Listeners (Museum Whisperers) Larkin has recorded the internal musings of the gallery audience. They don’t tell you what to think but offer you an insight into the musings of others as they peruse the museums cultural offerings. These audio guides turn the voice of knowledge and authority on its head. This voice is internal, honest, not always comprehensive. The gaps leave a space for us to explore our own thoughts and musings in response to what we see.

The Woman Flag subverts our pre-conceived notions of a flag as a banner for advertising, identity, a way or raising awareness of the museum. As an emblem it bears little relationship to museum audience and stands towering above. For the purpose of the exhibition it will be brought down to earth and made human, animated beyond its usual function. This performance will take place on Friday 4th June between 10.30am and 14.30pm.

'Beginnings', an Exhibition by Local Artist Róisín O'Farrell opens on June 20th in Kerry

Next weekend local artist Róisín O'Farrell will be packing up her paintings and making the trip from Wicklow to Kerry for her first major solo exhibition.

The show entitled 'Beginnings' will open on Valencia Island Co. Kerry on June 20th for one week before being shipped by ferry to the mainland to the Killarney Art Gallery in Killarney where it will open June 27th for a further week.

Róisín’s show entitled 'Beginnings' offers a selection of bright vibrant paintings, fresh contemporary still lifes and colourful interiors. They are the kind of paintings that stop, both the arty and the ordinary person alike, in their tracks.

A native of Bray, Róisín was in her own words 'steeped in art' from an early age, coming as she does from a family of talented and successful artists. She is also a daily painter, a growing international movement of artists who paint every day and blog their work.

Róisín paints in oil, using a strong palette and mainly synthetic brushes with a bright finish that give her work its distinctly vibrant brushwork. Her style is both contemporary and painterly. She posts her daily paintings on her blog at www.roisinofarrell.com which has built up a substantial following and her larger work is exhibited at the Killarney Art Gallery in Co. Kerry.

TBG&S in crisis (Monday 10 May 2010)
Very alarming noises from the Temple Bar Gallery and Studios direction. It seems that in a proposed restructuring, staff members have been given notice of being given notice - a nicety that allows time for staff to respond. In particular, the board of TBG&S apparently see no need for a CEO-cum-curatorial position, thus losing gallery director Marian Lovett her job. It seems the artists and board of TBG&S believe they can deliver shows in the gallery space themselves.

Jennie Moran is a former staff artist with Signal Arts Centre.
On Thursday 20th of May, Unit 4 of Merlin Park University Hospital will be given a series of embroidered pillowcases resulting from a project called Personal Effects. This project was developed over a number of years by Galway University Hospital Arts Trust and visual artist, Jennie Moran and kindly supported by the Arts Council’s Artist in the Community Scheme. Unit 4 is a facility for men and women who have recently experienced stroke.

Lian's exhibition, entitled 'Force Fields' opens in Signal next Tuesday 27th April and runs until Sunday 9th May.

Oscar winning films were the order of the evening, the line-up decided in advance by Signal's many movie buffs and critics. Last September the Signal Gang, decided to run away to the country and carry out our own murder mystery weekend… What a sight! What a laugh! We had Denis as red-hot diva Carrie Uso, Vincent as dare devil Vic Tory-Role, Penny as scorned wife Honor My-Owne, Anne-Marie as crime writer Agatha Sotherby, Karen as fat-walleted Bjorn Riche, Susan as gambling Lord Lootem, Claire as the pompous Cher Nell and Róisín, as the alcoholic ship’s doctor, Dr. Perce Scription. Moto-Jito, aka Greg, directed proceedings. Needless to say it was a to-be-repeated, laugh-a-minute success!

The Dublin Painting and Sketching Club's 132nd Exhibition

The Club was formed in October 1874, its aims were 'to bring together artists, amateurs and others interested in art and the holding of public exhibitions.' In the 21st century these aims remain in place. At the Annual exhibition 300 works are presented by our eighty members.

SIGNAL ARTS CENTRE 'ART IN CONTEXT' NATIONAL CULTURE NIGHT

Signal Arts Centre are looking for artists to participate in an 'Art in Context' in Bray town as part of National Culture Night held on Friday 24th September 2010. Art in Context will also coincide with other Signal events including an artist led tour, a Festival of Light, artist talks and more.

Through Art in Context, Signal would like to highlight a broad range of visual arts practice in the region and encourage artists to avail of the heightened level of publicity connected to National Culture Night to raise the profile of their own work. We are interested in the participation of artists working in a range of mediums, from the material to the ephemeral.

We hope that these and other events organised by different organisations will bring a festival atmosphere to the town.

Brief:
It is preferable that the work be site specific or responds to the context in which it is placed. The exact locations of the work have yet to be finalised but it is thought that sites will include disused and operational business premises and also public spaces within Bray town centre.

We would encourage artists to engage in the selection of location for their work. Members of our organising team are in contact with the Bray Chamber of Commerce and Bray Council and will make themselves available to negotiate the proposed space and project with the relevant parties.

Please bear in mind that this is for ONE NIGHT ONLY so therefore the work should be capable of being put up in one day and taken down the following day.

Also there are no funds available for this so please consider your costs and feasibility of the proposal.

Initial proposals of ideas should be marked for the attention of Noel Cleary, Signal Art Centre, 1 Albert Avenue, Bray, Co. Wicklow.

The only limits are your imagination and ingenuity!
